29th May 2014
19:00 – 22:00
Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

An audio-visual installation and performance event, on the theme of Digital Media, presented by collaborating students from the MSc in Sound Design, the MSc in Design and Digital Media, and the MSc in Acoustics and Music Technology. All students are part of ESALA’s Digital Media Studio Project course directed by Dr Martin Parker, Senior Lecturer in Sound Design.

Performances include:

Exploring Sonic Structures – Real time Sound Design

Timo Preece (Msc Sound Design)

Dara Etefaghi (Msc Sound Design)

Timo Preece (gravityterminal) and Dara Etefaghi (Msc Sound Design) have teamed up to create a unique, improvised electronic music performance.  Creating carefully crafted experimental soundscapes, they aim to explore a diverse full frequency sonic pallet that takes listeners on a scenic sonic journey. Ranging from ambient cinematic textures to beat driven structures, they will investigate how sound design is made music through engaging real time exhibition.

Piece for Viola and Electronics

Mikael Lind (MSc in Digital Composition)

Swedish composer Mikael Lind’s piece for viola and electronics explores the use of a musical instrument in the age of modern computer technology. A musical instrument can be something more than just a device which makes musical sounds, since the variety of sounds that can be created with these instruments can be analysed and used in various ways with electronic sequencers. In his performance, Lind will use a viola to create a modern electronic piece of music with glitchy rhythms and distorted feedback. He is a complete beginner on the viola, so Lind’s main aim is to create something completely new with his blend of amateur viola playing and clever use of electronic music techniques.

Brain Drain

Robbie Christie (MSc in Acoustics and Music Technology)

Qianqian Hu (MSc in Design and Digital Media)

Zechao Li (MSc in Design and Digital Media)

Asuka Kanetake (MSc in Design and Digital Media)

Donghui Xie (MSc in Design and Digital Media*)

Marina Papagianni (MSc in Design and Digital Media*)

Wolfgang Thomas (MSc student in Sound Design*)

The project was supervised by Professor Richard Coyne and PhD student, Dorothea Kalogianni.

Our performance will showcase the main elements from our DMSP project, Brain Drain, using a multimedia setup to investigate the link between sound and emotion. We will expose a performer to sound created using unique kinetic and electronic devices and determine the effect of the sounds on the performer’s mood based on brain-wave data obtained from EEG sensors in contact with the performer’s head. The brain-wave data is analysed to assess the emotional state of the performer in real-time, and this data is used to control animations projected onto the walls of the performance space. The purpose of the animations is to symbolise the changing emotions of the performer in a visually stimulating way.

* These members worked on the installation but will not be performing at the event.
